The Meaning of the Name of your Site:

Jaffa in hebrew is Yaffo, which means beautiful.

[duh, What the name of your site means]

Historical Background/Significance:

Jaffa is mentioned three times in the Tanach. It is one of the cities given to the tribe of Dan. The prophet Jonah began his journey to Tarshish, an unknown place, here. Jaffa was first established after the Flood by Noah's son Japheth, from whom the town took its name. In biblical times, Jaffa was ruled by the Egyptians, the Canaanites, the Philistines and other ancient people. It was founded by the Canaanites in the 18th century. Archeological evidence shows that Yaffa was inhabited around 7,500 years BCE and its harbor has been used for a very long time.

Do other Cultures or Religions have connections to your site?:

Christians have a connection to Yafo because they believe St. Peter's resurrection of the widow Tabitha took place in Jaffa. It is also significant to them because it was the city where Peter received direct instruction from G-d to share the gospel with non-Jewish people.

Share any Midrash, Fables, or other “stories” about the site:

The port of Jaffa is also mentioned in the story of Jonah, the son of Amittai, who was commanded to carry the words of the Lord in the city of Ninveh, but refused and tried to escape to Tarshish (Jonah 1 3): "But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD". A great storm threatened the safety of the ship, and the mariners threw him overboard, an he was swallowed by a whale (1 19): "And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights". Eventually, Jonah agreed to do as commanded by the Lord, so he was "vomited out upon dry land", and then went to Ninveh to complete the mission.
